He is survived by his wife of 72 years Katherine Elizabeth Smith, daughters Susan Castleberry and husband Charley of Marble Falls, TX and Sharon Harston and husband Larry of Dallas, TX; granddaughter Kristin and husband Steve Harvey great granddaughters Kendall and Karis Harvey of Austin, TX. William is also survived by a niece and two nephews and numerous cousins.
William is preceded in death by his parents Thomas Edgar and Mary Elizabeth Smith, brother Thomas Edgar Smith II and his sister Ruth Smith.
His family moved from Gilmer to Dallas in 1925. He graduated from Sunset High School in 1938 and in 1950 graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Management. William also has a Master’s degree from the University of Houston.
William served in The Coast Guard for 4 ½ years during World War II. He was a teacher and a lecturer at the Museum of Natural Science in Houston, TX. He also taught science in the Houston Independent School District for 25 years.
He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and nature and was well loved by his family. When asked “What are you doing today?” His reply was always “Just enjoying life.”
