STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Lifelong Staten Islander Helen Askey, 99, of Dongan Hills, the devoted matriarch of three generations of family, died Sunday in Richmond University Medical Center, in West Brighton.
Born Helen Sercia in Stapleton, she moved to Dongan Hills in 1969.
Mrs. Askey was a member of St. Ann's Golden Age Club and the AARP.
She was a longtime parishioner of St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills.
She cherished time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her first husband, Vincent Gauger, died in 1945, and her second husband, Harry Askey, died in 1984.
She also was preceded in death by her daughter, Charlotte Libertti, in 2001.
Surviving are her daughter, Patricia Gauger; three grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Grasmere.
