Mae Durkin Ryer, 107, died on February 12, 2014 at Hancock Hall in Danbury. Mae was born on February 6, 1907, in Danbury, to the late Alice Durkin Rooney and resided in Danbury for her entire life. Mae was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Bert F. Ryer.
Mae is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Mary Ann Ryer of East Harwich, Mass. and her daughter, Mary Ellen Ryer of Danbury. She is also survived by her loving grandsons, David Ryer and his wife, Holly, of Lutherville, MD.; Edward Ryer and his wife, Amy, of Randolph, NJ; and Andrew Ryer and his wife, Lindsey, of Portland, ME. Mae also leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Katherine Mae, Matthew Edward and Luke Joseph of Randolph, NJ whom she loved dearly.
Mae graduated from Danbury High School in 1925. She did clerical work in the office of one of the local hat factories to save enough money to attend nursing school. On June 2, 1931, Mae graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford, where she was the treasurer of her class. Mae then returned to Danbury where she married Bert Francis Ryer on June 28, 1941. Mae worked as a registered private duty nurse in the Danbury area for many years.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hancock Hall in Danbury for the loving care that they gave Mae in the last few years of her life.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Saint Joseph Church in Danbury, on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2014 at 10:00 am. Calling hours will be at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Monday, February 16, 2014, from 4:00 - 6:00 pm.
