Vernon Dean Manning, 81, of the Macey Community, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the V.A. Hospital in Temple. Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, February 23 at the Funeral home. Burial will follow in the Manning Cemetery.
Vernon was born to Jettie Mae Land and B.F. Manning on April 9, 1932 at the family home in the Macey Community. He joined the United States Navy on September 6, 1951, serving four years during the Korean War. He received the National Defense Service Medal, China Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 1 Star, and the United Nations Service Medal.
After leaving the Navy he returned home and worked cattle with his brother Robert on the family farm in Macey. He soon met and married the love of his life, Frances Jane Sanford. He began working as an electrician and became a longtime member of the IBEW Local Union 716. He worked for large commercial construction companies for over 30 years before he retired. He was also a member of the Rogers Prairie Masonic Lodge 540 in Normangee, Texas. Vernon loved fishing, hunting and gardening. He loved spending time in the country, living on the land where he was born, but most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, B.F. and Jettie; his wife Frances; his son Charles Pledger; his daughter Kay Killion; and eight sisters and four brothers.
He is survived by one brother Robert Manning of Bryan, TX; one sister, Lillie Chamberlain of Trinity, TX; daughter, Patricia Cunningham and husband Rex of Cleveland, TX; Grandchildren, Tiffiny and George Arakelian and their children Dustyn and Demi, Lance and Amber Pledger and their children Kaitlyn and Hayden, Melissa Pledger and her children Charli and Alli, Ryan Killion, Buddy Yancey and his five children, Wayne and Leslie Appling and their two children, April and Tom Funk and their four children, Chris and Sara Appling and their two children; and numerous other family and friends.
