She graduated from Alliance High School in 1943. She was involved in music from an early age, and spent summers studying music and singing at Chautauqua Institution. She graduated from Mt. Union College in 1947 with a Bachelor of Music degree and again in 1948 with a B. A. in Public School Music. She earned an M. S. from Kent State University in 1969.
Betty taught music in the Alliance Public Schools for four years, at Old Trail School for six years, and then taught for ten years each at Glover and Rankin Elementary Schools in Akron. The PTA in each of those schools awarded her a life membership for her work with students.
Betty sang with the Akron Symphony Chorus for many years and loved being a long-time member of St. Cecilia Choral Society. She also thoroughly enjoyed being a part of Fortnightly Club of Akron, a group devoted to a love of reading and learning. Her special interest was Tuesday Musical Association, which she served in many capacities including President. She was a recipient of Tuesday Musical’s Lola Rothmann Volunteer Achievement Award
.
She loved being active and fit, walking many miles on local trails, and hiking in local and national parks as well. She also loved traveling, and visited Europe, Africa and South America.
Of all her loves, family was the strongest. Sunday night suppers at her home were a ritual for family for years.
She and her husband, Bob, were married in 1948. They have a daughter and two sons: Susan Doherty (Steven Mayer) of Minneapolis, David Sloan (Wendy) and Douglas Sloan (Deborah) of Akron. They also have four grandsons, Kevan, John, Brian, and Benjamin Sloan. Betty thought of her close friends as extended family, particularly her morning walking group, Cliffside friends and friends from St. Cecilia and Tuesday Musical.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 1st, 1PM at the CATAVOLOS FUNERAL HOME 3653 West Market Street, Fairlawn. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Tuesday Musical Association, 15 Main Street, suite 301, Akron 44306.
