He was born near Sweetwater on May 16, 1923 to the late John G. and Rilla P. (Yardley) Sachtleben. He married Doris Weidhuner on April 4, 1944 in Indianapolis, IN.
Mr. Sachtleben attended Sweetwater Country School from 1st to the 8th grade. He then attended Greenview High School, graduating in 1941. He worked in St. Louis at Curtis-Wright helping to produce AT6 training planes before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps and proudly serving as a crewmember on B-24 bombers in the 15th Air Corps, 464th Bomber Group, based in Italy. He farmed the family farm between Sweetwater and Greenview from 1945 until retirement in 1988.
Mr. Sachtleben was a long-time member of Greenview Christian Church, where he taught the high school Sunday School class for many years, served as an elder, and was active in the Missions Committee. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Sachtleben moved to Springfield where they became members of West Side Christian Church and he served as a deacon and was active in the Beau Knots Sunday School class and AIM. He was a member of the American Legion Post 116, serving as past commander. Mr. Sachtleben also was a former member of the Board of Directors of Good News Productions, Int’l of Joplin, MO, and also the Board of Christian Homes, Inc., based in Lincoln, IL.
He is survived by his wife Doris; a daughter Barbara of Springfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Susan of Springfield; a grandson Christopher and great-grandson Arlo of Long Beach, CA; and granddaughter Rebecca and grandson-in-law Quentin Knobloch of Spokane, WA; a sister-in-law Nedra Howell, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Delmar, and infant twin grandsons.
Services are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd., Springfield, where visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014 from 4 to 7 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 11 am at the funeral home with Rev. Charlie Duggins officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Greenview, IL, with military honors being provided by the Menard Co. Honor Guard.
