Harlan K. Sims, age 91 of Dayton, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Miami Valley Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Jean Sims, in 1994. Two children survive him, daughter Kaye Kelly of Dayton, and son Greg and wife Patti Sims of Florida. He is also survived by his six grandchildren: Grant (Mary) Kelly, Patrick (Nicole) Kelly, Cara (Jeff) Anderson, Chris (Terri) Kelly, Kelly Anne Sims, Amy Lynne Sims, fifteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Harlan was born in Wilimington, OH to the late George and Verna Sims, who preceded him in death along with three sisters, Virginia, Reba, and Wilimina, and two brothers, George and Charles "Ebby". He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a member of the original UDT Team 3. It was because of his brave service that Harlan received the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device and was most recently inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor. Upon his honorable discharge, he was employed by NCR for 36 years as Labor Manager and Inspector. Following his tenure at NCR, Harlan worked for the City of Dayton for 15 years as a housing inspector. He was a devout member of the East Dayton Church of the Brethren, served on the NE Priority Board, and worked for the East Dayton community through the Sunshine Center. Friends may call at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME-Beavercreek Chapel, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Rd. at Grange Hall on Sunday afternoon, March 2 from 2-5. Funeral services will be held at the East Dayton Church of the Brethren, 3520 E. Third St. Dayton, OH on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the US Navy UDT-SEAL Museum, 3300 N Hwy A1A, Fort Pierce, FL 34949 in Harlan's memory.
