Estelle Bitman, lover of learning, of song, and of her husband of 66 years, Bernard “Bitzy” Bitman, died on March 1, 2014. Estelle was born on March 11, 1926, the daughter of Max and Helen Oberman of Overland, MO. She is the older sister of Albert Oberman and Leatrice Shank who passed away in July. She was the aunt of many and the much loved mother of Leslie and her husband, Paul Cohn, and of Doug and his wife, Susan Sinclair, and grandmother of Sophie Sinclair and Isabelle Bitman. Estelle graduated from Washington University in 1947 with a degree in psychology. She and Bitzy married October 12, 1947 and she embarked on a remarkably successful career as a homemaker and mother. Estelle was an avid reader and passed on her love of books to her children and grandchildren. She was also an active member of her Temple and served as co-chair of the Sisterhood. Estelle had a great sense of humor and will be remembered as witty, wise, and wonderful by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services at Temple Emanu-El, 393 Atlantic Ave, Marblehead on Sunday (today), March 2, 2014 at 2 PM. Interment at Temple Emanu-El Memorial Park, Danvers. Memorial observance following the interment on Sunday until 7 PM, Monday, March 3 from 7-9 PM and Tuesday, March 4 from 2-4 PM at the Summit Estate’s Community Building and on Thursday, March 6 from 7-9:30 PM at the home of Doug Bitman and Susan Sinclair. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Temple Emanu-El or the charity of your choice.
