Don was born June 1, 1922 and raised on his family’s farm in Delaware, Ohio. He attended Ohio State University in his Freshman Year on a Music Scholarship.
Don joined the Navy as a Seaman in 1941 at the beginning of WWII and at the end of the War attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Degree in Accounting. He worked his way through College as a Trombonist in a “Big Band”.
While attending UNC, he married Marjorie Ann Harrill in 1945 at Ashville, NC. Donald Edwin Kunze, Jr. was born in 1947.
Don, Sr. was commissioned in the US Navy in 1950 in Monterey, CA and became an Executive and Navigation Officer in the Korean War and for the United Nations. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander when he was Honorably Discharged in 1953.
Don re-married to Jimmie Follis on December 9, 1953 in San Francisco, CA. They lived in Sunnyvale, CA and had three daughters; Donna, Sandy, and Mindy. The family moved to Dallas, TX in 1964. He worked as Comptroller for Construction Companies, then changed to Tax Specialist in 1972. His favorite tax returns were the delinquent ones and he specialized in negotiating with the IRS.
He joined First Baptist Church of Carrollton and served in the Orchestra as a Trombonist. His favorite activities were playing the Trombone, and getting people out of trouble with the IRS. He was very good at problem solving over long distance telephone conversations and very strong with computers.
His parents, Clayton and Hazel, died at their home at Delaware, OH in 1970 and 1968. His brother, Glen died in 1973; and Gerald in 1979. His other brother, Raymond, still lives in Ohio and his brother Eugene, still in Maryland. Don left a Legacy with his strong faith in Christ and strong work ethic. He cared for each of his children, son-in-laws, grand and great-grandchildren while he remembered every birthday. He kept in touch by calling each of them and attended every family gathering.
Don is survived by his five children Donald Kunze, Jr., Larry Bergstrom, Donna and Steve Barrett, Sandy and Del Blundell and Mindy and Preston Dunn; Eleven Grandchildren Alicia Barrett Ward, Sarah Blundell McMillan, Jenny Blundell Del Toro, Audrey Barrett Kalisek, Andrew Blundell, Amy Barrett, Katie Blundell, Preston Dunn, Jr., Kathryn Dunn, Alec Barrett and Allison Barrrett; Ten Great Grandchildren Tanner Blair, Scott McMillean, Kaitlyn Kalisek, Carissa Kalisek, Issac Kalisek, Heath Ward, Taylor McMillan, Maya Ihsleib, Landrie Dunn and Bradley Del Toro.
Visitation Wednesday, March 5, 2014 from 6-9 pm at Rhoton Funeral Home. Donald will be laid to rest Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 9:30 am at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery will Military Honors. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 1 pm at the First Baptist Church of Carrollton.
