Susan Smith, 89, of Ventura, California, formerly of Minnesota, died peacefully in her sleep on March 22, 2014, at her home amongst family after a long fight with cancer. She has gone to be with her Lord and savior.
Born June 30, 1924 in Minnesota, to proud immigrant parents; she is predeceased by her parents, Andrew and Susan Sirotiak, and her late husband of 57 years, John Smith of Ventura, California; her sisters, Evelyn Carlson and Millie Stevens.
Susan was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother. Family was always important to her. She retired from K Mart when she was 62. She loved travelling over the world and the United States with her husband during their retirement years. Her grandchildren were a source of joy to her. She always looked forward to the summers when her grandchildren stayed the summer with her.
Her faith in Christ was the cornerstone of her life. She gave of her time and talents to the church by being actively involved in Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and the Alter Guild at her church. She was a charter member at Grace Lutheran Church.
Susan will be lovingly remembered by her survivors which include her two sisters, Lee Thompson and Sylvia Gamec and her brother, Andrew Sirotiak, Jr.; her three children, Robert Smith, Debbie Vandembrink, and Jeff Smith; her four grandchildren, Jennifer Smith, Jeremy Smith, Hannah Smith, and Shana Vandembrink; and her daughter-in-law, Fe Smith and son-in-law, Hans Vandembrink, nieces and nephews.
The memorial service commemorating her life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 6190 Telephone Rd, Ventura, at 10 AM on Monday, March 31. Pastor Koch will be officiating. The Burial Service will continue at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park located at 5400 Valentine Rd, Ventura.
Instead of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
