Extra Information (not printed in the obituary, but important memories from the funeral and interment ceremony).
On April 5th, at the funeral home service, Dan's daughter Crystal read a poem that she found in her Dad's apartment. It was in a Cleveland Clinic Employee Binder, and she opened right to this page when first looking through the binder. It was called, "It Couldn't Be Done." It seemed very fitting to read this in Dan's honor because he believed you never knew what you could do unless you tried. A phrase Dan used was, "Ya gotta have a horse in the race, if you want a chance to win." If someone told Dan, "You can't," he sure wouldn't let that stop him from trying anything!
It Couldn't Be Done, by Edgar A. Guest
Somebody said that it couldn't be done.
But he with a chuckle replied that "Maybe it couldn't," but he would be one who wouldn't say so til he'd tried.
So he buckled right in, with the trace of a grin on his face.
If he worried, he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing that couldn't be done, and he did it.
Somebody scoffed, "Oh, you'll never do that; At least no one ever has done it."
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat.
And the first thing we knew he'd begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin, without any doubting or quiddit, he started to sing as he tackled the thing that couldn't be done, and he did it.
There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done.
There are thousands to prophecy failure.
There are thousands to point out to you, one by one, the dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin.
Just take off your coat and go to it.
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing that "cannot be done," and you'll do it.
On June 27th, during the interment ceremony at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, his daughter Caroline read aloud this poetic letter that she wrote to her Dad:
Dad,
When it is silent I hear you say, "Hey Care."
When something is broken, I hear, "Daddy fix it."
When I am sad, I hear your laugh and we watch Funniest Home Videos and laugh with you.
When I feel overwhelmed I hear, "You don't know until you try."
When I worry about being a good mother, I remember your words, "Teach Calvin to read and he can do anything. Teach him to swim so he won't drown."
You did a good job Dad...we can read and we can swim.
When I feel alone, I know you're right there with me.
When I have cake, I sing, "Dad is great! He gives us chocolate cake!"
When Calvin laughs before he falls asleep I know you have kissed him good night.
When I worry about my son, I hear you say, "Yep, Calvin is gonna be alllllllright."
When I think of you I smile and feel grateful you were my Dad and that you will live on, in us, forever.
I love you always.
Love ya bye,
Caroline
