It is with heavy hearts that the family of Virginia Hocker Potter informs her friends of her death on April 2, 2014 at the age of 93. Jinny passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter in Huntsville, AL, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 3rd 1920 to George F. and Virginia B. Hocker in Bethlehem, PA where she was raised with her brother George. She graduated from Edgewood Park School, Westchester County, NY in 1939.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Nelson Potter. Married in 1940, they lived most of their married life in Seaford, DE where they raised their family. Jinny volunteered at the Nanicoke Hospital and with the scouts. In later years, they opened their home to other children. Jinny and Bill retired to Florida in 1978 where they spent their time in St. Petersburg, on the Florida Keys and enjoyed hosting holidays with family in North Carolina where everyone anticipated her figgy pudding and pecan pie!
She was huge Penn State fan and an avid Bridge player who had little patience for those who didn’t feel the passion she did for the game. Although not a musician, Jinny loved live concerts and above all a bold marching band!
Jinny made an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew her. She was a thoughtful listener who always lent a helping hand. She cherished family and friends, always had a ready smile and brought out the best in those around her. She is survived by three children, eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and extended family in the US and Italy. She lived a very full life and will be greatly missed.
No public memorial is planned, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Lung Association or your favorite charity.
