He was born December 12, 1930, near Rotan in Fisher County, Texa,s to Francisco and Soledad (Garza) Mijares. He married Dolores Medrano on June 30, 1956, in Rotan, Texas. He worked 30 years as a mail carrier in Odessa. He grew up farming and farmed all his life in his spare time on his farms in Fisher County. He loved baseball and coached many young men in Odessa in the Southside Little League with the Athletics Supply team. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Elks Club.
He served in the Korean War. His job was to repair communication wires when the North Koreans destroyed them with enemy fire.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Calixto; his wife Dolores (2008), his son Frank (2013), and his son Dan (1990).
He is survived by daughter Dora Turner (Billy) of Abernathy, daughter Estella Alvarado (David) of the The Woodlands, and daughter-in-law Angie Mijares of Odessa; grandchildren Holly Duban (Sascha) of Round Rock, Brian Turner of Ada, Oklahoma; Daniel Alvarado and Kelli Alvarado of The Woodlands; Rashell Mijares of The Woodlands; Frank Mijares Jr, Angelica Mijares, and Esteban Mijares of Odessa; great granddaughter Charlotte Duban of Round Rock; his sister Nena Cantu of Rotan and his brother Emilio Mijares of Big Spring.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the Texas Veteran’s Home in Big Spring and Bender Terrace Nursing Home in Lubbock.
A rosary will be recited at 6 pm April 13, 2014, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel.
Mass will be celebrated at 10am Monday, April 14, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Odessa. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa.
