She was a graduate of Liberty School, Class of 1949. Martha was committed to the service of the young people of Liberty; she served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, gave piano lessons in her home and most notably, taught Kindergarten at Liberty School for over 20 years. She was a member of Liberty First United Methodist Church for over 60 years, 15 of those years she served as the organist and pianist. Along with her husband, Charles they owned and operated Liberty Appliance Company for 30 years.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 15 at 2:00 p.m. at The Loflin Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Martha was the daughter of the late William “Bill” and Lillian Spoon Dickens and was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Carter, and brother, Harold Dickens.
Surviving are her daughters, Ann Gray of Yanceyville and Ellen Luck and husband, Gil of Liberty; son, Charles F. Carter II and wife, Marilyn of Liberty; sister, Hilda Rose Johnson and husband, Pike of Liberty; brother, Joe Dickens and wife, Ruth of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Adam Gray, Corey McAdams, and Kara Luck; and best friend, Jerri Hemric.
The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Dr. Maura Hamrick and the staff at Randolph Medical Associates in Liberty, Lori and Bruce Cobb, Barbara Jones and the staff of Universal Healthcare for all of your compassionate care to our mother during this these past several years.
