Nora (Cherry)Delores Kirlew Hampden, passed away Friday evening, April 11, 2014 at home in Greensboro, NC. Viewing will be at 12:30 PM, prior to the funeral service which will be held at 1:30 PM, Friday, April 18, 2014, at the Greensboro Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 1320 Fleming Road.
Nora was born on March 13, 1947 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. She was a graduate of Harrison Memorial High School, Montego Bay. She migrated to the United States in 1967, and lived in Queens Village, New York, where she attended NY City Community College and earned an associate’s degree in Secretarial Science.
In 1997, Nora moved to Greensboro, North Carolina where she worked for Kindred Hospital as a Medical Staff Coordinator. In 2010, Nora was diagnosed with Peritoneal Cancer. As a part of her journey she authored two books to help others who are battling cancer: Side-Swiped: My Journey with Peritoneal Cancer; When the Unexpected Happens, and Shifting Gears: Encountering Roadblocks.
Nora was a loyal member of the Greensboro Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She was very active with the young people, and was the director for the youth choir. She will be greatly missed by her church family and friends.
Nora was preceded in death by her parents James and Sarah Walker Kirlew. She is survived by her two sons, Winston DaCosta of Queens, NY and Jason Hampden of Greensboro, NC; two sisters, Jean Harvey of Brooklyn, NY and Christine Thompson of Hamden, CT; two grandchildren, Diana and Jaylen; and a host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and cousins.
