Stan Hursey, 66, was born on the 1st of April 1948, to Ceola and Clancy Hursey in Zanesville, Ohio. He passed away on Sunday, the 20th of April 2014. His parents, his half-sister Patty and his younger brother, John, preceded him in death.
Stan graduated from Sheridan High School in Thornville, OH in 1966 where he was the second student in the school’s history to letter in sports all 4-years - he majored in sports and making friends. Stan worked as a guard at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio, and as a mechanic at Lancaster Colony Glass in Lancaster, Ohio. He moved to Louisiana in the early 1970’s to begin working offshore in the oil industry. Stan continued to work in the oil industry until his retirement in July 2013.
Stan met the love of his life, Jessie Jewell, in Port Arthur, Texas in 1988. After a seven day courtship, they married. Technically, they married prior to their first “real date.” But, they were inseparable, Stan adored Jessie and they had a life of love and happiness together.
Stan and Jessie moved to Houston in 1990. But, their “real lives” in Houston began in 1996 when they became part of their HLSR™ family. Stan and Jessie have been active in the rodeo community since 1996. Stan was Jessie’s “pig proxy” on the Junior Swine Auction Committee before joining the Rodeo Express Committee. Stan later joined the Llama and Alpaca Committee before finding his home on the Wine Sales Committee in 2010 where he served as the “Rookie Daddy” for the last three years.
In 2008, Stan and Jessie began traveling frequently to Mexico. They became VIPs at the Secrets Resorts where they are now considered family by the locals. Stan was known as “Papi” by many who loved him.
Stan is survived by his two sons, Mark McGrew and Adam Hursey, and five grandchildren, Evan and Ethan McGrew, Adam and Austin Nettles, and Anna Hursey. Stan has two older brothers, Mike and David Hursey and a sister, Wilma Garcia, and a half-sister Emma Lou. Stan will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Jessie, his family, his very large Rodeo family, his family in Mexico at Secrets, and numerous other friends who consider him family.
A celebration of Stan's life will be held at seven o’ clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 30th of April in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, Texas. Immediately following, all guests are invited to a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
For those so desiring, in lieu of floral tributes, the family would appreciate donations in Stan's memory to be directed to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Educational Fund, where the intent is to establish a scholarship in his name. The address is HLSR™ Educational Fund, P.O. Box 20070, Houston, TX 77225. Telephone 832-667-1000.
Jessie would like to express gratitude to those who have helped her manage through this extremely difficult time, Heather Leverett, Alisa Christensen, Wanda Chovanec, Diane Green, Keith Powell, Stephen Mink, and numerous other girlfriends who have provided comfort and support.
