Charles was born to Willie Mae Allen Chandler and Thomas Scott Chandler II on December 10th, 1932 at a farmhouse on Panther Creek, out in the farmland between Frisco and Prosper, Texas. Charles was the last child of four daughters and four brothers born to Willie Mae and Thomas Scott. He married Carolyn Ann Tanner on July 3, 1958. They were married for 23 years.
Charles loved aviation. From his experience with the “Air Scouts” in 1949 until very recently, he pursued that love. Charles owned and flew several aircraft over the last 40 years of his life. He was an accomplished and respected aerobatic pilot and enjoyed his last aircraft, an experimental RV-3, immensely, much to the delight and exhilaration of his family who observed.
Charles was a scholar in the sense of the word which is often unrecognized today. Research and tireless reading were an everyday experience throughout his life. His ability to steer his family and friends to the truly pertinent and meaningful written observations on life was one of the greatest of the many gifts he shared with his family and friends. Charles taught sociology at Tulane, Southwest Texas State University, and at Texas Tech from 1966 until his retirement in 2000.
Charles loved music. He gifted and encouraged those around him, especially his children and grandchildren, with his love of music, its appreciation, and his knowledge. His love of the banjo, made him a connoisseur of bluegrass, but he was an avid listener of classical, jazz, country, pop, and blues as well.
Charles is survived by his sister Louise Pitts of Haltom City, Texas, his brother Dan and wife Delores of Casper, Wyoming, his son Paul Chandler and spouse Jennifer of Kingwood Texas, his son Eugene Chandler and spouse Alice of Arlington Texas, and his daughter Carrie Casarez and spouse Carlos of Whiteface Texas. Grandchildren include William, Stephanie, Katherine, Brandon, Matthew, Christopher, Austin, Elizabeth, and Carla. Great-grandchildren include Helen, Alexander, Sophia, and Dylan Thomas. Of course he is survived by many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews of all generations.
His innate humility and compassion for all, guided his life, and his faith in Christ sustained him through his latter years.
