She was born in Madison, the daughter of Charles E. Fentiman and Lydia B. (Watson) Fentiman.
She graduated from the Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing in Lewiston as a registered nurse.
She married Alfred M. Carpenter in 1952.
Muriel worked nearly a half century at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan. Most of this time was as the operating room supervisor. She retired from Redington-Fairview General Hospital in 2000.
Muriel was a member of the Nazarene Church, a member of the Nationals Elks Foundation and a past trustee, and a member of the Skowhegan-Madison Elks Lodge.
Muriel loved to travel, mostly to visit family members. Her hobbies included knitting, Bingo, and going to casinos. In her earlier years, she enjoyed camping with the family at the Abnaki Campground in Madison. She also, loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Alfred, of 62 years, of Skowhegan; four children: Patricia Bowditch and her husband, Terry, of Santee, S.C., Cheryl LeClair and her husband, Denny, of Skowhegan, James Carpenter, of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Michael Carpenter, of Jonesborough, Tenn.; one sister, Harriette Gordon, of Skowhegan; grandchildren Tiffany LeClair Poulin and her husband, Travis, of Canaan, Alicia Carpenter, of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Kevin Nelen, of Bristol, Tenn.; great-grandchildren Hailey, Saige and Hunter Poulin, Chloe, Aiden and Alexis Nelen; several nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by two brothers, George and Richard Fentiman; and one grandson, Gary LeClair.
Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2014, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at First Congregational Church, River Road, Norridgewock, with the Rev. Nathan Richards officiating. A gathering of family and friends will immediately follow at the church. Burial will be held later at Sunset Cemetery in North Anson.
