Dean Sylvanus Caldwell, 92, of Hickory, went to be with his Lord, on May 11, 2014 at his residence. Born November 11, 1921 in Maiden, he was the son of the late Levi Martin Caldwell and Nona Zelma Drum Caldwell. He was a member of Sandy Ridge Wesleyan Church and retired as a truck driver from Champion International Paper and Deitz Motor Lines. He proudly served in the US Navy as a 3RD Class Petty Officer on the USS Wyoming from September 14, 1942 to October 5, 1945. He and his wife Catherine loved music, especially bluegrass. Dean enjoyed playing his guitar, singing, baseball, basketball, swimming, traveling, joke telling and driving a truck. Of all of these passions, music brought him peace.
In addition to his parents, Dean was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Christy Michelle Kirby; brothers, Dennis Caldwell, Gaius Caldwell, Melvin Caldwell, Arnold Caldwell and Wendell Caldwell; and sisters, Elizabeth (Elsie) Caldwell Glowers, Venta Deane Caldwell Hunsucker and Vida Caldwell Branch.
Dean is survived by his wife of 72 years, Catherine “Cat” Isenhour Caldwell; daughters, Patricia C. Kirby and husband Fred; Rita Medley and Cathy Townsend and husband Rick; son, Mike Caldwell and wife Denise; grandchildren, Tamara Green, Jeff Medley, Angela Hunter, Deana James and Jordan Caldwell; great grandchildren, Curtis, Alex and Nolan Medley, Sierra Keller, Kailey and Courtney Hunter; sisters, Idelia Shook of Newton, Edith Bolick of Hickory, Nina Linebarger and Willa Beal of Maiden; sisters-in-law, Virginia Caldwell, Josephine Caldwell, Martha Caldwell, Suella Isenhour, Glenda Isenhour, Edna Isenhour and Ossie Caldwell.
A Celebration of Life, with Military rites, will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Sandy Ridge Wesleyan Church with Rev. Scott Howard and Rev. Charles Patton officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens

The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
