Sara Franklin Hardy, age 85, of McCalla, died May 31, 2014, at Decatur General Hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. at Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Memory Chapel with Bro. J. Carrol Jones and Bro. Bill Noe officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services at the funeral home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus and Nellie N. Akins; sisters, Ruth Teasley, Sue Johnson, and Maggie Carter; brothers, R. Z. Akins, Jr. and Raymon R. Akins; and husbands, James W. (Chuck) Franklin and Forrest Hardy.
Survivors include her daughter, Brenda Franklin Staggs of Moulton; sisters, Eudora Hamilton (Harold) of Tuscaloosa and Ann Burroughs Emerson of Cottondale; brother, Jerry W. Akins (Linda) of Northport; grandchildren, Joshua Staggs (Valerie) of Danville and Nathan Staggs of Moulton; great-grandchildren, Layla, Abbey, Ellie Kate Staggs of Danville; and son-in-law, Dale Staggs of Moulton.
Sara was one of nine children born to Rufus and Nellie Akins. She was an avid gardener and loved her church and family. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Pallbearers will be Billy Colburn, Roger Burroughs, Michael Akins, Jason Akins, Jeremy Akins and Keith Hardemon.
Honorary pallbearers are Alabama Dept. of Transportation and Dr. Debra Davis.
