Muriel Newsom Blak passed away Thursday June 26 at the age of 96 at her home in Marin County, surrounded by her family. A fourth generation San Franciscan, Muriel was the matriarch of the pioneering Newsom family of San Francisco.
Muriel was born on October 30,1917, the daughter of George Newsom and Elizabeth McCann. She attended Lowell High School.
On June 29, 1940, she married Einar Gemmel Blak of San Francisco. They made their home in San Francisco, in San Mateo, and finally in Marin. They were long time members of the Meadow Club in Fairfax.
Muriel worked as a volunteer for many years in Marin, was an avid bridge player and had many lifelong friends.
Muriel is predeceased by her husband, Einar G. Blak, her brother Dr. William A. Newsom and her sister Virginia Newsom Paganini.
She is survived by her three daughters Elizabeth Blak and Joanne Murphy of Marin County and Virginia Kistler of St.Paul, Minnesota and by eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, who knew her fondly as “Mimi”.
A rosary will be held at Keaton’s Mortuary in San Rafael on Wednesday July 2 at 11:30. On Thursday July 3, there will be a reception at Smith Ranch Homes from 2 to 4.
Private committal at Mt. Olivet in San Rafael.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Hospice by the Bay, Larkspur, Ca.
