She attended the one-room Oseuma Elementary school house, and graduated from Afton High School in Afton, OK. In 1950, at the age of 21, Dorothy moved to the Portland area. She finally settled in Vancouver and became a member of Memorial Lutheran Church. There, during choir practice, she met the love of her life, Dick. They married at Memorial Lutheran Church on June 10, 1955. The church continued to be central to Dorothy’s life throughout the rest of her years. She enjoyed serving others as a Sunday school teacher, board member, custodian, and the director of children’s education. Her special joy and passion was spending time with her dear friends at the church Quilters ministry.
Dorothy had many hobbies throughout the years. She was an avid gardener, growing mostly vegetables. She canned fruit, made pickles, and was famous for her apple cider. She also enjoyed bowling, loved music and played the ukulele. Nutrition and health were important to her and she took pleasure in helping people stay healthy. Dorothy was a devoted mother and grandmother.
Dorothy is survived by her loving husband, Dick; children, Richard (Joan) Schlonga, Lisa Schlonga, Michael (Connie) Schlonga and Colleen Schlonga; sister, Laverne Cox; and grandchildren, Michelle and Victor Schlonga.
Viewing for Dorothy will be held Friday, July 11, from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Vancouver Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 12, at Memorial Lutheran Church, 2700 E. 28th St., Vancouver.
