He was born August 17, 1922 in East Guilford, NY the son of the late
Nellie (Mann) Young.
Harry graduated from Oneonta High School the class of 1941 and proudly
served his country in the United States Army during WWII as a Corporal in
Italy and also North Africa until his discharge in 1945.
On July 12, 1973, Harry married Patricia Adair.
For 31 years he was a postal carrier for the United States Post Office in
Oneonta until his retirement in 1977.
A life-long area resident, Harry was a member of the Oneonta American
Legion and was also a life member of the B.P.O.E. Oneonta #1312.
He had many hobbies and enjoyed playing golf and bowling; Harry was
inducted into the Oneonta Bowling Hall of Fame.
Harry is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Rice of Oneonta; five
children, Roberta and Benson Persing of Duanesburg, Charlene and Alan
Jaklitsch of East Meredith, Denise and Harold Wakin of Laurens, Faith and
Bob Klein of Maryland and David and Mina Rice of Troy;
son-in-law, Raymond Putnam; of Richmondville; seven grandchildren;
five great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two children, Harry Robin Rice and Sandra
Putnam; one granddaughter, Amanda Wakin; one sister, Anita Young; and one
brother, Virgil Bennett.
A graveside memorial service with military honors will be held on
Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta
with the Reverend Judith A. Thistle officiating. Memorial donations in
Harry's name may be made to Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care,
Inc., 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, New York 13820.
