Her life began on the family farm. She was of Norwegian decent and raised with her ten siblings and her parents. She did everything from cooking and cleaning to milking cows and driving a tractor. LaVerne obtained her bachelor's degree from Augustana College in S. Dak. and started her teaching career. She married the love of her life, Robert L. Aslesen, in 1950. Bob and Koppy, as they were known, were happily together for nearly 55 years. They had four children.
In her early days she loved swimming and was a life guard. She was fiercely competitive at table games and sports, at the delight of everyone. She enjoyed bowling, badminton, singing, gardening, cooking and being a mom.
A whole new chapter opened up in her life after moving to California in the mid 1960's. She started teaching at the Hanford Adult school in 1967, and was well-loved by many students. She was an active member of her beloved St. James Lutheran Church, for 49 years. During her life she was also involved in PTA, HUHS Band Boosters, Hanford Community Chorus, Gardening Club, Kings County Symphony, American Assoc.of Univ. Women, and most recently Cal Retired Teacher's Association. She was blessed with a beautiful voice. She was the choir director for St. James for many years. She and her husband were featured soloists at several area churches and at weddings and funerals.
She is survived by two sisters: Gladys Arneson of Des Moines, WA and Lillian Hagg (Art) of Madison, S.Dak.; one brother-in-law -Herb Aslesen (Rosalie) of Spearfish, S.Dak and two sister-in-laws: Lari Marin of Mobridge, S. Dak.and Shirley Wood (Robb) of Sedona, AZ. Four children: Steven Aslesen (Sandra) of Novato, CA; Jeffrey Aslesen (Jocelyn) of Plano, TX; Jennifer Davis (Terry) of Visalia, CA, and Julie Wootten (Geary) of Hanford, CA. Five grandchildren: Brandon Davis and Jordan Davis (Kindra), of Visalia, CA and Claire, Jana, and Kimberly Aslesen of Novato, CA. Two step-grandchildren: Tobias Porter and Elizabeth Porter, and 6 step-great grand- children. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she also loved very much.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Robert; parents: Nellie and Arthur Kopperud; brothers: Milford, Nels, Herbert and Roy and sisters:
Alice, Nellie Ann, Dotty and Mildred. Her faith was reflected in her daily acts of grace and kindness. She will be missed more than words can say.
Visitation will be Thursday July 31, 2014 from 5-7pm at People’s Funeral Chapel 501 N Douty Hanford CA. Graveside services will be Friday August 1st at 12pm at Grangeville Cemetery 10428 14th Ave Armona CA followed by a memorial service at St. James Lutheran Church 1780 Emma Lee Ln Hanford CA
