1917 - 2014
Henry D. Dugger, 97, of Pensacola, died July 29, 2014. He was born in Lynchburg, VA, and was preceded in death by parents, Henry B. Dugger and Elizabeth McCarron Dugger; and wife of 66 years, Dorothy Crickenberger Dugger.
Mr. Dugger lived in Pensacola since 1973. He was a graduate, GED from Holy Cross Academy, Lynchburg, VA, and attended Charleston School of Commerce for three years in Charleston, West VA. He retired from the Navy after 30 years as a Chief Petty Officer. He was a veteran of WWII and Korea, and participated in the Battle of the Atlantic from 1939 to 1942. He made the invasion of North Africa at Casablanca aboard the Minesweeper, Stansbury, DMS #8, engaged many German submarines in combat, and sunk several while doing convoy duty in the North Atlantic, as well as South and Central America. Henry made several invasions of the Japanese Islands, Tarawa, Kawagelien, Eniwitok, Iwo Jimo, and Okinawa. His Destroyer Squadron shot down more Japanese Suicide planes than any other fleet group. He received the Navy Unit Commendation for heroism during the Okinawa campaign. Chief Dugger completed his active duty after four years of recruiting duty in West VA. He completed many Navy service schools, Recruit Personnel, Uniflow Steam Engine, Radar & CIC, and Leadership.
Mr. Dugger also retired from Federal service as a Building's Manager, and from his own locksmith supply business, "Key Lock Key" in Pensacola for 17 years.
He was a lifelong Roman Catholic, attending St. Anne Catholic Church for well over 30 years, and was active in the Roundup as a Chairman. He was also Secretary for the Holy Name Society, and was Chairman of the Ushers for several years.
He is survived by daughter, Carolyn D. Greenwood, of Longwood, FL; son, Dennis (Pam) of Pensacola; granddaughter, Jennifer Santangelo, of Tulsa, OK; grandson, Marc Padgett (Nicole), of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Phillip H. Dugger and Kathryn McCarron Dugger, of Pensacola; great grandchildren, Laurelee Rhodes, of St. Mary's, FL; Kerrigan and Hunter Padgett, of Jacksonville, FL; Kennedy Padgett, of San Clemente, CA; and Olivia Santangelo, of Tulsa, OK.
The visitation will be held at Oak Lawn Funeral Home on Monday, August 04, 2014 from 5pm to 7pm. The funeral mass will be held at St. Anne Catholic Church, officiated by Father James Thoyalil on Tuesday, August 05, 2014 at 11am. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors.
