Lorraine Esterly Pierce, age 73, died August 10, 2014 at Sparrow Hospital with her husband of 47 years, Howard, at her side. She was born in Winona, Minnesota to the Reverend Ralph and Alberta Esterly. Lorraine was a proud graduate of Humboldt High School in St. Paul, MN, she was also a graduate of North Central College in Naperville, IL. She earned an MA in ethnic history from the University of Minnesota and an MSW from Michigan State University.
Lorraine worked at the MSU College of Human Medicine, the Area Office on Aging, and for many years was in a private practice as a geriatric care manager working with older persons and their caregivers.
Lorraine enjoyed travel, hiking, camping, canoeing, particularly in the Boundary Area Canoe Wilderness of Minnesota where she and husband Howard owned a cabin near Ely, MN. Lorraine was a life member of The Nature Conservancy and the University Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband Howard Pierce, sister Carol King of North Muskegon and several nieces and nephews.
Lorraine will be cremated and inurned at the Esterly plot in Hanover, MN with many of her German immigrant relatives. A memorial service will be scheduled in the fall in East Lansing. Memorial contributions are suggested to Haven House, 121 Whitehills Dr. East Lansing, MI 48823 or Capital Area Humane Society, 7095 W. Grand River Ave., Lansing, MI 48906 in memory of Lorraine.
