Born in Elberton, GA on March 17, 1938, Bobby was the son of the late Forrest Grady Towns and Martha Elizabeth Eberhardt, and was preceded in death by daughter Leslie Hamilton Towns. He graduated from Athens High School as valedictorian. He graduated from the University of Georgia with BBA and MBA degrees, where he was Distinguished Military Graduate, a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Scabbard and Blade, Georgia Football Lettermen’s Club, “G” Club, Gridiron Secret Society, and Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. At UGA, he lettered in football and track. He played football in the NFL. Towns was a retired from AFLAC, and retired from the United States Army with the rank of Colonel. He served on numerous community charitable boards in Columbus and Athens. Towns officiated SEC Football for 30 years, and was inducted into the Athens Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a member of National Society Sons of the American Revolution, serving as Historian General. He was also a member of the General Society Sons of the Revolution, Colonial Wars, and War of 1812, Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge, Magna Charta Barons, Order of Founders of North America, and Military Order of Stars and Bars. He was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Robin Redfearn Towns of Athens; children Forrest Craig Towns (Havilyn), Gainesville; Ashley Towns Carter (Christopher), Athens, and Kirby Matthew Towns (Kathryn), Evans; brother Preston Eugene Towns (Julie), Loganville; and grandchildren Sarah Moe, Forrest Towns, Julianna Towns, Marimartin Towns, Matthew Carter, Leslie Carter, Lauren Carter, Lovett Towns, and Bonnell Towns.
A memorial service will be held 5 PM Friday, February 13th in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. COL Clifford C. Lowery officiating. The visitation will be held from 3-5 PM prior to the service at Bernstein Funeral Home, with private interment at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
