Mrs. Thelma Coleman-Scroggins was born on July 25, 1933, in Elkhart, Texas to proud parents Mr. Elonzo Clewis, Sr. and Mrs. Leona (Owens) Clewis. Thelma was the oldest of nine children and the first born grandchild on both paternal and maternal sides of the Clewis and Owens families.
The family later moved to Frederick, Oklahoma where they attended Friendship Baptist Church and where at a young age, Thelma accepted Christ and was baptized by Rev. A.B. Joiner. Thelma attended Kennedy Elementary School and Boyd High School.
A young wife and mother, she lived in Altus, OK and later in Houston, TX. She returned to her parental home in Frederick and in the late 1950’s, the family moved on the Amarillo, TX. In the late 60’s, Thelma moved her family to Austin, TX, where she lived out the rest of her life. She supported her family by working at Saint David Hospital, she attended Austin Beauty College and worked part time as a beautician.
She faithfully served at Lake Hills Congregation of Jehovah’s Witness and at Valley View Jehovah’s Witness, both in Austin, TX.
Mrs. Scroggins is preceded her in death by her children, Cathleen, Kenneth, Mary, Barry, Glenda, Helen; her parents, Elonzo and Leona Clewis; and Siblings, Judy Clewis, Elonzo (Pete) Clewis, Jr., Margie N. Clewis (Barry), Erma L. Clewis (Harris) Cummings, and Jannette M. Clewis Davis-Moss.
Mrs. Scroggins is survived her loving children and four generations of grandchildren. Children: Billy Eugene Coleman, Jr. (Frances); Lee Burness Coleman (Marcia); Barbara Coleman-Bishop; Rodney R. Chambers (Treniece); Tommy Jerald Coleman (Kimberly); and Jeannie Dixon Coleman. She is survived by her Siblings: Mrs. Ruby P. Clewis-Dawson of San Leandro, CA; Mr. Troy E. Clewis of Portland, OR; and Ms. Effie J. Clewis (Henry) of Lancaster, TX. Aunt: Mrs. Carrie Clewis of Seattle WA., and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
