The charity of your prayers is requested for the repose of the soul of the late Mary Gerarda Therese Scheer, eldest daughter and first-born child of the late William Clifford Enright and the late Eileen Enright, nee Roche. Mary died on 9 March 2017 at the General campus of the Ottawa Hospital. Wife of James Scheer, deacon of the Archdiocese of Ottawa. Mother of Catherine Elizabeth Ratcliffe (Grant); Andrew James Scheer (Jillian); and Anne Marie Clare Grabetz (Bernard). Grandmother of twelve grandchildren: Thomas - her firstborn grandchild - Grace, Madeline, Henry, Mary Scheer: all of Regina, SK; Hannah, Bridget, Emma Ratcliffe: all of Apollo Beach, FL; and Joseph, Virginia, Robert, Georgina Grabetz: all of Ottawa. Mary was born 20 Sept. 1943 in Toronto. She attended Loretto College School in Toronto, and, upon graduating, in 1961, she studied at St. Joseph School of Nursing, being capped as a registered nurse in 1964. She had a happy and much devoted career as an RN, specializing in paediatric nursing. In addition to her nursing service, she taught nursing students at various times for Algonquin College, University of Ottawa, St. Lawrence College, and the CEGEP in Gatineau. Her membership in Nurses for Life combined nursing at C.H.E.O. and her enthusiastic love for children. In politics she was an active member of her local federal and provincial riding associations, serving both on boards of directors and as elected delegate to policy conferences, at which she advanced policies favourable to human life. She loved her religious heritage and worked to promote and defend it in word and deed. Until her health failed, she was an active parishioner at Saint Patrick’s Basilica, where she volunteered on the first Refugee Committee. A vigil for the repose of her soul and a visitation of family and friends will be held on Sunday, 12 March, at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. The rosary will be recited about 2:30 p.m., at 7:30 p.m., and at 8:45 p.m. The Vigil for the Deceased will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. An exequial Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, 13 March, in Saint Patrick’s Basilica, 220 Kent St., Ottawa, by Father Lindsay Harrison. Interment to follow at Hope Cemetery, Ottawa. Anima eius et animae omnium fidelium defunctorum, per misericordiam Dei, requiescant in pace.
