(September 11, 1946 - August 6, 2017)
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Bonnie Evalyn Walt passed away surrounded by family at home on Sunday, August 6, 2017 following a brief but hard-fought battle with cancer.
Bonnie, daughter of the late Bonnie and Ralph Brindley, was born in Tacoma, Washington and grew up in Washington and Oregon. She graduated from high school in Medford, Oregon. Bonnie married Thomas Dale Walt in May of 1969 and shortly thereafter graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelors degree in Pharmacy. She was a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority while at OSU.
Following graduation from Oregon State, Bonnie and Tom moved to the Washington D.C. area where Tom was stationed with the Navy. Bonnie started her Pharmacy career there. Her two daughters, Lisa and Debra were born while Bonnie and Tom lived there. Bonnie put her career on hold to stay at home with her girls. They moved to California for three years and then, in 1977 moved to Portland, Oregon. When the girls began elementary school, Bonnie returned to work as an in-house pharmacist at West Hills Convalescent Center where she worked for many years.
During the 18 years they lived in Portland, Bonnie was very involved in the community including as a PTA member, Girl Scout leader and Cookie mom. During this period and despite a busy work schedule, Bonnie always made time to chaperone Lisa and Debra’s school field trips and shuttle the girls to their various activities.
Bonnie and Tom moved to Cary, NC in 1995 where she continued her career in pharmacy. She retired in 1998 to be a full-time “Nana” to her grandchildren Evalyn and Thomas, both of whom she loved to spoil.
In addition to all her family activities, Bonnie enjoyed spending time at the MacGregor Downs Country Club and golf course. She played with the “Lassies” 9-hole golf group and often joined a close group of friends for weekly dinners at the Club or elsewhere. She also found great joy participating in two bridge groups and the MDCC Garden Club.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband Tom in 2009. She is survived by daughters Lisa Walt and Debra Johnson, son-in-law Tom Johnson, grandchildren Evalyn and Thomas Johnson, brother Ralph Brindley and a large extended family. They all join in a warm remembrance of her kindness, dignity, and unwavering strength.
A memorial service with Eucharist will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church at 221 Union Street, Cary, NC 27511. The family will receive friends after the service in the church’s parish hall.
