James E. (Jim) Green, Jr. died in Atlanta on September 25, 2017. Born in Mobile, Alabama, Jim was the son of James E. Green (Sr.) and Martha Haas Green of Mobile. He enjoyed life in Mobile until the age of ten when the family moved to Atlanta where he attended Morningside Elementary, O’Keefe Junior High, Boys High, and then Henry Grady High. At Grady, he was elected student body president and captain of the school’s first football team. He then went on to attend Princeton University where he served as class president and graduated cum laude in 1953. Following college, he served two years in the U S Army Artillery before returning to Atlanta with the rank of First Lieutenant in 1955. Jim joined Citizens and Southern National Bank in 1955, advancing over the next twenty-five years to the position of General Vice President and member of the Executive Committee. He then formed his own company, J. E. Green and Company, engaged in providing loan review services for community banks in the Southeast and throughout the Midwest for the next twenty-two years. In 1958, Jim married Nancy S. Evans of Oak Ridge, TN. She would remain his loyal and beloved wife for the next 45 years until her death in 2003. Jim retired from business during the last year of Nancy’s life, and in the following thirteen years summered at his mountain home in Highlands, NC. For six months each year, he enjoyed the cool air, beautiful green, mountain scenery, and the pleasures of a small town. Jim enjoyed sports and loved golf all of his life. While he never played golf well or often, he had a great interest in the game, followed it closely, and attended many events including 24 US Open tournaments. He hit the ball with considerable enthusiasm but was never able to score well. He once said, “I like everything about the game but the score.” Nancy and Jim had two children, Lyle and Cynthia. Both gave their parents great pride. Lyle is employed with Time-Warner. Cindy is the wife of H. Thomas Higgins and the mother of Jim’s two much beloved grandchildren, Claire and Ellie Higgins. At Jim’s request, the only service will be private with immediate family members only. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Atlanta Humane Society, 951 Howell Mill Road NW, Atlanta, GA 30318. The family is establishing an educational fund for the students of the Highlands School in his memory.
