Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Lafayette on Monday, December 4, 2017 at 11:00 am for Welborne Truitt Calhoun, age 88, who passed away surrounded by family on November 30, 2017. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the start of service at First Baptist Church on Monday morning. An additional memorial service will be held at the Chapel at Lakewood Memorial Park Funeral Home South in Jackson, MS on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at the Lakewood Memorial Park Cemetery South. Pastors Steve Horn and Luther Burney will conduct services at First Baptist Church in Lafayette and Luther Burney will conduct the service in Jackson, MS.
A visitation time for friends and family will be held at Delhomme Funeral Home on Bertrand Drive in Lafayette on Sunday, December 3, 2017 from 3:00-8:00 pm.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 67 years, Ora Yvonne (Bonnie) Calhoun of Carencro, LA; one daughter, Trudy Yvonne Boudreaux and her husband, Kirk James Boudreaux of Houston, TX; two grandchildren, Christopher Ryan Boudreaux and Kirsten Rachael Boudreaux of Houston, TX; one step-granddaughter Nicole Trahan and her husband Koby Trahan of Lafayette, LA; one step grandson, Shawn Boudreaux of New Orleans, LA; three step great grandchildren Evan Trahan, Tagg Trahan, and Stacie Lynn Trahan of Lafayette, LA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Onie Mae Calhoun of Pearl MS; his brother Richard Calhoun of Lena, MS; his sister Sue Alford of Pearl, MS; his sister Irene Calhoun of Pearl, MS; his step granddaughter, Stacie Lynn Boudreaux of Lafayette, LA.
Truitt was a former resident of Jackson, MS and Brandon, MS and had resided in Carencro, LA for the past 21 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle and a friend to all who knew him. He was known for his highly productive garden, his involvement and commitment to the Lions Club and their commitment to eyesight, his love of fishing on a pretty day and his beautiful way of telling stories about his life. However, he will always be remembered for his love and commitment to our Lord Jesus and his desire for all he contacted to share in the same joyous relationship he had.
Law enforcement was his vocation for thirty-three years. He served in the Jackson Police Department in Jackson, MS for twenty-three years; four years in the patrol division and nineteen years in the juvenile department. He completed the last 10 years of his law enforcement career at the Flowood Police Department in Flowood, MS.
Truitt graduated from Central High School in Jackson, MS; attended two years at Hinds JR. College, Raymond, MS, and also attended numerous schools pertaining to police work. He was ordained a deacon in 1954 and over the years served as deacon chairman, Sunday School director and head usher. For many recent years, Truitt faithfully greeted the First Baptist Church family in Lafayette with a smile and a bulletin.
He served two years in the Korean conflict from 1950-1952, stationed in Germany and assigned to the Message Center. He was a member of the Reservoir Lions Club in Brandon, MS for twenty years and a member of the Lafayette Lions Club in Lafayette, LA for over five years.
Pallbearers for the Lafayette memorial service will be Kirk Boudreaux, Christopher Boudreaux, Shawn Boudreaux, Koby Trahan, Roddy McKenzie and Vernon Keller. Pallbearers for the Jackson MS memorial service will be Rickie Calhoun, Gerald Calhoun, Earl May, Dickie Denson, Johnny Dewitt and Richie McClusky.
The family requests, memorial contributions be made in Truitt’s name to the Gideons organization as he believed in their mission to spread the message of Jesus. We want to thank Lamm Hospice of Crowley and our nurse Kristy Putnam for her sweet spirit, Carlita Lantier of Rayne for her help and guidance at our hour of need as Truitt made his journey to heaven and all of the wonderful friends for their love and support.
