He was born February 3, 1947, in Mount Enterprise, Texas, to parents Harley Orvin Matlock and Lydia Jim Banks Matlock. Tommy, a member of the Baptist faith, was a longtime resident of Porter, Texas, and worked a number of years as a truck driver.
Tommy proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He often gave of his time and truck driving abilities to drive for the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial “Wall.” He was also dedicated to his family and friends; he was one of those you could always count on for a helping hand.
He and his wife, Susan Carol, were married July 24, 1971, and she preceded him in death on July 27, 2014. Tommy was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Barbara Weatherly.
His survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Becky Bird of Santa Teresa, New Mexico; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Calvin Banks of Nacogdoches, Texas, Mindy and Jim Hodges of Porter, Texas, and Kelly and Kenneth Taylor of Willis, Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Donna Matlock of Rusk, Texas; a sister, Fay Williams of Nacogdoches, Texas; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 15, 2017, at Cason Monk-Metcalf.
Graveside rites will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 16, 2017, at Isabell Chapel Cemetery, located on County Road 3271 off U.S. Hwy. 259 south of Mount Enterprise, Texas.
