‘Magoo’ / ‘Bakes’

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear elder Vernon Lyle Baker. Vern was born to his mother Hazel Loretta (nee Johnston) and Ronald Thomas Baker.
Vern grew up on Mission Reserve #1 then later resided on the Capilano reserve where he raised his girls. He was a great athlete, playing basketball and soccer, but he is most remembered for his high achievements in lacrosse. He played with the Coquitlam J-Hawks Junior A’s and later with the North Shore Indians. He coached with Lance Baker and Sam Seward a Ladies basketball team to provincial championship and refereed basketball in his spare time. Vern attended St. Paul’s Indian Residential school, St. Thomas Aquinas and Langara college.
He worked many years for NV school district and was well known, respected and loved by all youth from our Nation and the Norgate community. Vern is fondly remembered as a strong community member and role model. He attended many community events always ready to greet friends and family with a big smile and hug. Vern was a loving husband, father and grandfather, as well as a loved brother and “uncle” in our community and he will be deeply missed.
Vern is survived by his loving wife Alice Doris Maurina Baker; and daughters Shannon Dawn Baker and Casey Dyan Gloria Baker; granddaughters Sarai Tahra-Dawn Baker-Small Legs and Ayayasha-Brielle Baker-Gittens; siblings Karen Baker, William Warren Baker (Daneen), Bonita Lee Baker (Manuel), Heather Ann Baker (James), Thomas Glenn Baker, Victoria Lynn Michels (Bob) and many nephews and nieces.
A prayer service will be held on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 7:00 pm and a funeral service on Tuesday Janunary 9, 2018 at 10:00 am both at Chief Joe Mathias Centre, 100 Capilano Road, North Vancouver, BC
