Maria Deolinda Gordo, 89, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Alden Court in Fairhaven where she had resided for the last year. She was the wife of the late Tomé Dos Santos Ferreira Gordo.
Born in Ilhavo, Portugal, a daughter of the late Manuel and Josefa (DeJesus Ferreira) DeMelo, she came to the United States in 1968 and settled in New Bedford.
Mrs. Gordo was a talented seamstress who worked at Delilah’s Bridal Salon for many years until her retirement.
A devout Catholic, she was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and prayed the rosary daily. She was devoted to Maria de Conceicao known as Saozinha de Alenquer, Santo Antonio and Nossa Senhora do Rosário.
Mrs. Gordo enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting and embroidery. She was a very charitable, kind, selfless person who always thought of others. Mrs. Gordo was a dedicated mother and grandmother who would do anything for her children. She worked very hard to provide a wonderful life for her family with every available opportunity.
She is survived by a daughter, Rosary Marie DeMello and her husband Edward of Mattapoisett; a granddaughter, Shantelle Marie DoCarmo and her husband Rahim Dhalla of Ottawa, Canada; a great-granddaughter, Ellia Marie Dhalla; a sister, Rosa Ferreira DeMelo of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Fernando Ferriera DeMelo.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 9:30am to 11:30am in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven, followed by a Funeral Mass at 12pm in Our Lady of Mt.
