Edward William Hume, son of Harry Hume and Hazel Dowsett Hume, passed away January 8, 2018, age 94, at Bayview Health Care Center in Waterford. Ed was a native son and lifelong resident of New London, but traveled far and wide over the course of his life.
As a young teenager in the midst of the Great Depression, Ed left high school to enroll in the Civilian Conservation Corps program, and was assigned to a CCC camp in Colorado where he eagerly learned mechanical and building skills while working on various construction projects. When he returned to New London, Ed was happy to land a job at Electric Boat as a welder. Not long after that, when the United States entered WWII, Ed enlisted in the Navy, beginning as a Seaman 1st class and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. He was on The Blue Ghost from its maiden shakedown voyage to the Caribbean through its triumphant entry into Tokyo Bay for Japan’s surrender ceremony. Along the way they were involved in almost every major conflict in the Pacific theater. As a second class shipfitter, Ed prided himself on knowing just about every square inch of the ship, and did whatever it took to keep the ship running and the planes flying, often under the most dire and formidable conditions. During his on-board tour he earned 6 medals and 13 battle stars, including the Presidential Citation for heroism in action against enemy forces.
Upon returning from the war he mustered his strengths into beginning a new life. While he worked at many jobs, Ed found himself drawn to the field of firefighting, and starting as a volunteer, embarked upon a career in the New London Fire Department. Ed strived to master all aspects of the profession, and advanced to the rank of Lieutenant before his retirement. Ed also helped serve the city through his membership in the New London Elks, and was proud of the programs and fund-raisers he worked for. He was elected Elk of the Year in 1970, and remained an honorary member until his death.
Above all, Ed was dedicated to his family, always there for his parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, in good times and bad. He was well known for his wonderful sense of humor, and had countless stories and jokes ready to share on any occasion. He will be deeply missed and always remembered with love and gratitude by his family. His many friends will remember the loyalty and devotion of the “Silver Fox”, as he was unfailingly ready to offer his support, advice and encouragement when it was most needed.
He is survived by his sisters Shirley Hume Verhoeven and Carol Hume Knowles. Ed is predeceased by his siblings, Harry Hume, Jr., Betty Hume Fisher, Muriel Hume Michel, Donald Hume, Barbara Hume Bentley, Joan Hume, and Dorothy Hume Andrews.
There are no calling hours or services, per Ed’s wishes. Interment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Fulton Theroux Funeral Home.
