William John Joynt, age 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on December 30, 2017, in Mesa, Arizona. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy, and three devoted children, Carolyn Lageman, Middletown, R.I.; Stephen (Judy) Joynt, Scarsdale, N.Y., and Thomas (Jane) Joynt, Tempe, AZ, who will miss him dearly.
Born in North Tiverton, RI on August 17, 1925, he was one of three children born to the late Richard and Ella Simister Joynt. In addition to his wife and children, he leaves a brother, Richard (Ruth) Joynt and a sister Julie (James) Collins, both of Somerset, MA. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Rebecca (CK) LaFond, Helena, Montana; Daniel (Venus) Lageman, Cranford, NJ: Sarah (Fred) Salling, Durham, CT; Jeffery (Michele) Lageman, Hopewell, NJ; Alison (Nicholas) Fisher, Auburndale, MA; Andrew (Alona) Joynt, Tuckahoe, NY; Erin Joynt, Phoenix, AZ; Timothy (Erin) Joynt, Broomfield, CO; and Jamie Joynt, Tempe, AZ; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
In 1944, William was a member of the original crew on board the newly commissioned battleship, WISCONSIN, which participated in six major World War II campaigns in the Pacific Theater. After the war ended, he worked at the Naval War College in Newport, RI until 1967 when he and his family relocated from Newport to Sierra Vista, AZ for employment with the Army at Fort Huachuca. He retired in 1987, after which he spent many hours helping needy people as a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. For the past 30 years he has lived part-time in Mesa, Arizona.
His Funeral will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 10:00AM in St. Patrick’s Church, 306 South Street, Somerset. Visiting hours will be held prior to his Mass from 8:30AM to 9:30AM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Rose E. Sullivan, 866 County Street, Somerset. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River immediately after the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Sierra Vista, Arizona.
