It is with great sadness that the family of James Harvold Brow announces the passing of their beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle, on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Rainycrest Long Term Care. James ‘Jim’ Brow passed away peacefully, one week after his 82nd birthday.
Jim was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on January 6, 1936 to John and Inga Brow. He had an older sister Trudy and a younger brother Jackie.
Jim was a Mason in the Masonic Lodge in Prince Albert, and held many jobs in his youth prior to pursuing his career as a teacher at the Fort Frances High School. He was a jail guard in Prince Albert, a mineworker in North Saskatchewan, and a Metropolitan Life Insurance agent in Thunder Bay. Jim graduated in 1966 from Lakehead University with a bachelor of Arts, and a major in Psychology.
Jim met Helen in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and they were married on July 4, 1964. They moved to Fort Frances, Ontario in 1966, where Jim taught Math and Science at the high school. Jim and Helen bought an island on Rainy Lake and with the help of many good friends, built the cabin that the family enjoys to this day. Jim was always happiest when he was building something. Shortly after the cabin was started, Jim and Helen began to build their family of five children, whom they nicknamed the five CB’s. In 1997, Jim retired from teaching, and became a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Ontario.
Jim was involved in the community in many aspects. He coached high school curling, was a FFAST swim club official where he officiated at many events, including the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg. He volunteered for Search and Rescue, the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Tournament, the Committee of Adjustment for the Town of Fort Frances, the Sportsman’s club, the Bingo Hall Committee, and officiated at multiple curling bonspiels.
Jim will be missed by his wife, Helen, of 53 years, his daughters, Cari (Derek Olshevski), Cindy (Brian Rose), and Caylee (Jamie Woolsey), and his two sons, Christopher Brow and Cory Brow, as well as his grandchildren Cailin and Allen Olshevski, Keddie, Jonah, Harleigh and Christian Brow-Rose, Jake and Harper Woolsey, Terrance Huntley, and his great grandson, Ivan Huntley-Stevens. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and spending time at the cabin on Rainy Lake. He will be greatly missed by all. His family expresses many thanks for the excellent care received by the staff at Rainycrest.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Thursday, January 18 at 11:00am, at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29 in Fort Frances. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fort Frances Aquanauts Swim Club, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or to a charity of your choice.
