Dorothy May (Atkinson) Joynt, age 93, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2018 in Mesa, Arizona, only 45 days after William, her husband of 69 years. She is survived by three devoted children: Carolyn Lageman, Middletown, RI; Stephen (Judy) Joynt, Scarsdale, NY; and Thomas (Jane) Joynt, Tempe, AZ.
Born in Medford, MA on January 12, 1925, she was one of two daughters born to the late Alonzo Atkinson and Edith Collard Atkinson. She grew up on Nantucket Island, MA and in New Bedford, MA. On September 6, 1948 she was married to William Joynt in St. Lawrence Catholic Church in New Bedford, MA and moved to Newport RI, where her three children were born. She was employed by the Alumni Office of St. George’s School in Middletown, RI for ten years before moving to Sierra Vista in 1967. In Arizona she worked for the Sierra Vista School Department and as Records Administrator for the U.S. Army Communications Command. She was active at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church and in the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
In addition to her three children, Dorothy leaves a nephew, Paul Theisen, and two nieces, Carol Young and Sharon Murphy of Florida. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren: Rebecca (CK) LaFond, Helena, MT; Daniel (Venus) Lageman, Cranford, NJ; Sarah (Fred) Salling, Durham, CT; Jeffery (Michelle) Lageman, Hopewell, NJ; Alison (Nicholas) Fisher, Auburndale, MA; Andrew (Alona) Joynt, Tuckahoe, NY; Erin Joynt, Phoenix, AZ; Timothy (Erin) Joynt, Broomfield, CO; and Jamie Joynt, Tempe, AZ; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be on Saturday, February 24, 2018, from 8:30-9:30am at Waring-Sullivan Home at Rose E. Sullivan, 866 County Street, Somerset, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 24th at 10am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Somerset, MA. Burial will be immediately following mass at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fall River, MA.
