He was born October 18, 1941 in Oneonta the son of the late Sidney B. and Dorothy (Eggler) Utter.
Sid attended Charlotte Valley Central School. In October 1958 he enlisted in the United States Army. He served for 13 months in Korea. Following his honorable discharge he began working for the D&H Railroad.
Sid was an independent truck driver for over 50 years but for the last three years, he drove bus for the City of Oneonta. For 19 years he was a Master Sergeant for the New York Guard retiring in 2012.
On August 13, 1988, Sidney married Barbara Quick in Davenport.
He was an avid gun collector, a history buff and enjoyed discussing politics. But what meant the most to Sid was spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren all of which he gave each a different nickname.
Sid was a member of the Sidney VFW.
Sidney is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Jane Utter, Davenport Center; seven children, Chon M. Taylor, Oneonta, Terri J. and Pepe Burgher, Portlandville, Naomi L Castle and Robert Dickson, Bainbridge, Edie M. and Bill Halstead, Davenport, Susan and Ronald Carey, Davenport, Chad L. and Sarah Winne, Davenport Center and Brett C. and Hope Winne, Davenport Center; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; one sister, Bonnie and James Weibel, Guilford; one uncle, John Powers, Oneonta; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Sidney C. “Chuckie” Utter and 2 brothers, Raymond Utter and Alfred Quick.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, February 19, 2018 in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta from 12:00 – 2:00 PM. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2:00 with Rev. Steve Estes officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
