CHAPIN - John “Jack” Baatz passed away unexpectedly in his home surrounded by his family on Feb. 19, 2018. Born on Feb. 8, 1934 in Newark, New Jersey, he spent most of his life as a resident of Spring Lake, NJ, and moved to Chapin, South Carolina, four years ago. He was a graduate of St. Rose in Belmar, NJ, and attended Notre Dame University. As a young man, he served in the U.S. Navy as a weatherman from 1952-57. He then worked at Wonder Bread -East Brunswick, NJ, as a sales manager -he was there for 42 years. He was an exempt member of the Spring Lake Goodwill Fire Co. #2 and the Spring Lake First Aid Squad, where he also served as ex-captain.
Those left to cherish his memory are his lovely wife of 57 years, Marilyn “Lynn” Baatz; children, Joseph Baatz (Cathy); Jaclyn Bader (Alan); Mark Baatz (Yvonne Torres fiancée); grandson, Joshua Bader (Lindsay) and their son Aaron James; granddaughter, Emily Bader; grandson, Joseph Baatz Jr. (Tiffany) and great-grandsons, Christopher John and Billy Zachariah; his sister Patricia Meltesen (Tom); brother-in-law Tom Wilson (Cheryl); and a large extended family. He is the son of the late Margaret Baatz and John Baatz Sr. He is predeceased by his beloved grandson, Christopher John Baatz. He was the most loving, generous, caring and big hunk of a man. He will be greatly missed by everyone who loved and knew him.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., with a service immediately following, on Friday, February, 23, 2018 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Children’s Center of Neptune New Jersey, New Jersey.
