Hoard, Sr. and Hazel Johnson Hoard. He learned to walk at the old Clermont Hotel, but the family soon moved to Savannah, where he grew up and attended Jenkins High School. Exceptionally bright, he applied his considerable intellect to whatever task he undertook. As a student at the University of Georgia, he was one of the founders of the Committee on Gay Education and a campus leader in the nascent gay rights movement. Moving to Atlanta, he began a twenty-five year career at the Internal Revenue Service, a very unpopular job with a lot of power, but he always treated others with courtesy and consideration. In 1983 he moved to Washington, DC and headed the IRS’s initial push to computerize agency records. Returning to Atlanta in 1995, he and his partner Donald Taylor-Farmer restored a rambling Victorian mansion in College Park and operated a B&B before he retired from the IRS in 1998. Indefatigable, even as his health declined, he rehabilitated and sold several residences over the next few years, doing much of the physical work himself. He was kind, witty, insightful, a delightful companion, and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his beloved cocker spaniels; Roscoe, Roxy, Pluto, Priscilla, Betty, Lucy, Bonnie, Toby, Ascleplus, Squee Pee, Fido, Joe, and Boogoo, as well as his husband Donald Taylor-Farmer of College Park. Graveside Services will be held Friday, March 10th 2018 at 3:00 pm in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Arrangements under the direction of Horis A. Ward Funeral Home – Fairview Chapel.
