Gary Leigh Walter, 55, of Cary, North Carolina, passed away on March 12, 2018, after a lengthy illness. He was born on November 4, 1962, in Arlington Virginia, and grew up in Vienna, Virginia, where he attended George C. Marshall High School.
Gary earned both a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, and a master’s degree in Systems Engineering from George Mason University in Fairfax Virginia. His 33 year career in civil service spanned several agencies, first with the Defense Department for 7 years, and then moving on to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and finally the Environmental Protection Agency. At NOAA and the EPA, Gary worked on groundbreaking supercomputing technology, designing and implementing cutting edge information technology systems at the dawn of the internet. He represented the EPA on the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Project, which was a multi-year, multi-agency effort to ensure that the United States continued to be a global leader in the world of advanced information technologies.
Gary enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved being with his family. He liked fast cars (especially Mustangs), drinking beer, going to the movies and taking trips to the beach.
Gary was preceded in death by both of his parents, Charles and Florence Walter, as well as his brother, Dale Walter. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Jeanne McGuire Walter, and his three sons, James, Matthew, and Charles.
A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, Gary requested that a charitable donation be made to your favorite charity in his name.
