Leroy was my cousin and every time he came to Brownfield, he would stop and see my mother, Ola Johnson.  We always had time for dominoes and visiting at the Family Reunions.  To the family, my thoughts and prayers will be with you during this time.  It will be rough, but God's Love and family will get you through it.  I found a picture of Billy Wayne, Ola and Leroy and wanted to share it with you. 

It was a sweet blessing in my life to have known Leroy!  He was such a great man, and I’m saddened to hear of his passing. He always had a smile on his face and a welcoming spirit.  He was also a little ornery and fun to play 42 with.  He loved his family and spending time with his family.  He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his sweet family as they say goodbye for now to a man that loved them deeply.   

Leroy gave me my first job in construction in 1970 on the Baptist Church in Claude,  Tx, I learned very quickly that he was a very hard working with an eye for detail on the jobs he oversaw, he expected everyone on the crew to work hard with quality craftsmanship. I learned mostly that he was a very good man and friend- he was a great steward of the talent the Lord gave him in construction and of interacting with people. I will miss his humor and the times we had together. God bless your family. 

Not sure how to put 30 plus years of friendship in one of two statements.  Leroy was such a wonderful, caring, Christian man and I am heartbroken about his passing. I know that he is in heaven having the time of his eternal life worshiping and having fellowship with his loved ones whom he has joined and most of all seeing Jesus .  What a glorious day that was. He will be sorely missed and I thank God that he, Barbara and his kids and grandkids are in our life.  Love to all!

I have many memories of my dad.  I can't even begin to write them all down.  I remember he was always very concerned that his hair looked good. Once just before he went in for surgery he asked me  "how does my hair look?" I assured him it looked good.  When  he woke up from surgery we had the same conversation. I assured him again his hair looked good.  Of course I always thought he was very handsome. Also he always had a song in his heart and he shared with whoever was around.  I loved to hear him just randomly start singing.  I will miss his voice. Like I said there are too many memories to share.  My favorite childhood memory is he let me stand on his feet & he would walk me to the dinner table. Oh to be little again.  I love you, Daddy and I will see you again.

Joy! That’s what I think of to describe Leroy he  saw the good in everyone,when nobody else did. The JOY of Christ,family, & friends was part of his conversation daily .

Part Two

My last conversation with him, we talked of Pilgrims Progress, a book he saw me read that he picked up as well. I take comfort in John Bunyan's description of what Pa is doing now.
"You must there receive the comfort of all your toil, and have joy for all your sorrow; you must reap what you have sown, even the fruit of all your Prayers and Tears, and sufferings for the King by the way. IN that place you must wear Crowns of God, and enjoy the perpetual sight and Visions of the Holy One, for there you shall see him as he is. There also you shall serve him continually with praise, with shoutings and thanksgiving, whom you desired to serve in the World, though with much difficulty, because of the infirmity of your flesh."

I take comfort that Pa:
Labored for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,
He talked of all his wondrous love and care
And when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done
And when the roll is called up yonder He is there. 

Part One
Pa liked to tell stories. I remember he told me once that there were times he was not at school when the roll was called. He said either he was out with a buddy or working hard when times got tough for the family.

I learned many things from my Pa, 
First, That Christ is to be the center. Whether it was family life, work or leisure time conversation of Christ was never far behind. 
Second, I learned the value of hard work. Pa often said times were tough when he was young, but he learned when he was young to work hard by his father's example. I too, have been blessed with many hard working men as examples, Pa among the finest of them. 
Third, I learned that family comes first. Pa brought so much joy to much of our family--by his laughter, singing and story telling. Being a carpenter, he knew the power of tools. One he often used was the tool of the tongue. He knew it's power and wielded it to build up his family.
Lastly, I learned to sing Praises to our King--loudly. And to find a wife who could correct my words, when I may have sung them wrong. Car rides with Mammy and Pa were always some form of entertainment. Pa would sing a chorus-- and mammy would correct his words. Again Pa would sing but no one ever knew if he'd sing the right words or not the second time. 

I will forever be grateful for the legacy that Pa has left for our family. He always made me feel a part of the family even before I officially married into it. It’s hard to find the words right now, but I look forward to sharing the memories of Pa with my children someday, and for now, remembering his life and how much he blessed those around him. We rejoice knowing that he is singing all the right words in heaven today. 

Thanks for sharing Missy with me whenever I was visiting, Pa. We will greatly miss you. 

As I have read through the memories and remembered the past 30+ years I have known this man, I can only imagine what he is doing today in Heaven.  His life here on earth was full of working, drinking coffee, teaching, drinking coffee, helping, drinking coffee, singing (many times the words to many songs in one, or the words to one song with many tunes). helping, drinking coffee, playing golf, drinking coffee, and many other things, and drinking coffee.  He loved life and he loved everyone.  He told me once that he wanted us to agree that it was ok for us to disagree and still be friends.  He cared for young people more than any man I knew.  Leroy and Barbara were always bringing some youngsters to church with them.  They have always reached out to those in need.  Oh, and he loved to drink coffee.  He worked hard for so many years, right up to the end of his life here on earth.  Today Leroy, is up in Heaven inviting someone to go get coffee and a doughnut, or maybe playing golf, or working on a building crew building someones mansion in glory.  He has no more pain.  He cares for everyone, he was loved by all that knew him, and he will be greatly missed by all of us that were fortunate enough to have had him in their lives.  We love you Leroy Evans.


Killingsworth Construction Company was blessed to provide many church construction jobs to Leroy.  Upon joining my father (Woodrow) in the church design and construction business, I was as a young man with lots to learn.  Upon our decision to start working jointly with Leroy, and his being the superintendent on my first church project in Lubbock.   He along with other men of excellence ( Doc, Red, Walt, Herman, etc)  were supervising our jobs across 6 states in the Southwest.  Leroy was such a "steadfast" leader of men, very productive, and  always had a smile.  His tenure with us spanned 15+ years.  His memories are embedded in our history.  For knowing and working with him, we thank God.         Bless you Barbara, and know that Leroy was a "happy and content" man ..... such a confirmation of you as his wife , and the girls as his children.

There is no way I can convey the sorry we all have for losing the fellowship we have all had with this man. When I married Sherry he took me in to this family and made me feel as if I had always been a part of it. The knowledge and wisdom he showed me will never be forgotten. His heart was full of the love of God and he showed it constantly in everything he did and said.
I pray for comfort for Pa’s family and friends and that we rest in the assurance that one day we will all be together again at the foot of our Lord singing along with him.

There are so many memories I could share here...i can't choose just one.  So I'm going to list  words and phrases that remind me of him. Some relate to certain memories some are descriptions ...you may not get them all but they all hold a special place in my heart
 Riding lawn mower, missy, joyful, huge recliner, quarters for flies, always had a project, back porch, sunsets,  catfish fries, Friday night laundry and games, "go out to the shop", golf, singing, humming, funny,dominos, apricots, whistling, choir, mountains, fishing, frogs & grasshoppers,  church, faith, anniversary dance,  westerns,amethyst ring, coffee, genuine, family, loved, ...there are so many more 

Pa was everything you would think of a man of faith being.   He was an example to many and loved by more.  The proudest I think I have seen him was holding his great grands.  Nothing put put a smile on his face bigger than that of holding Grayson and Raylan.  The depth of love and respect could be described as boundless that  I have for him as well as so many others.

I love you Pa .



Leroy was one of my older cousins in a very big family. Still, he made a point to visit with me at reunions.--even though I was a "little" cousin.  He and Barbara  used to come visit my mom and dad in Lubbock. We always loved to see them. My dad enjoyed visiting with Leroy as much as he enjoyed visiting with his brothers. He will be missed.

 I was never fortunate enough to meet Leroy but I wish that I had been able to shake his hand and tell him how grateful my husband and I are  that they were the only Godly examples that our daughter Kalee  ever really had in Amarillo.  I know in this hard time that there is comfort in the fact that he gets to sit in our Fathers arms and that the day will come that we get to see him and I will finally get to shake his hand. our prayers and thoughts are with you in this time God bless you all
