Dr. Stamm was born July 14, 1924 in Seattle to Ted and Mayme Stamm. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1942 and served honorably in the Navy for the duration of World War II. After graduating from Medical School in 1952 he did his residency at Harborview Medical Center and Children’s Orthopedic Hospital. After General Pediatrics, he moved into the role of Children’s Hospital’s first Pediatric Cardiologist; a position he served in for more than 50 years.
Dr. Stamm was very active, biking to and from work and swimming daily. He enjoyed the outdoors; weekends were spent skiing, and hiking. He was also known by family and friends for his spontaneous sense of humor; his infectious smile touched everyone.
Beloved by his patients, Dr. Stamm is perhaps best known for Stanley Stamm Summer Camp, which he founded in 1967. As an outdoor enthusiast, he wanted to find a way to get his patients – those with serious illnesses – out into the wilderness to experience the fun of a week-long camp. He brought 19 kids, two other Children’s doctors and a medical student to Carnation, Washington for the very first camp.
Today, Stanley Stamm Summer Camp has grown to 100 campers and over 200 volunteers – and Stanley attended the camp every single year. Last July, he was named a “Hometown Hero” by WSECU and KIRO Radio.
An example of the type of physician and person Dr. Stamm was can be summarized from a quote by Dr. F. Bruder Stapleton, Chief Academic Officer and Professor of Pediatrics , Seattle Children’s Hospital (quoting from an earlier Seattle Times article on Stamm Camp, August 24, 2010): “Dr. Stamm personifies the characteristics of a pediatrician more than anyone. He’s been the single greatest role model for generations of pediatricians who come through Children’s. He’s the type of physician who helps his patients by his mere presence, as well as his medical expertise. He’s such a kind and humble leader.”
There will be a tree planting and Honor Guard ceremony honoring Dr. Stamm at Sunset Lake camp, Sunday, August 12th, 2018 at 5:30 pm.
