Luke began his work ethics at an early age in Homer Louisiana helping his family working in the fields. As a young man he left for Houston, Texas to work for Howard Hughes Co. He often spoke and told stories about his friends and brothers early years together.
In June 1945 Luke listened to his brother-in-law and married his lifelong sweetheart beloved Jearlener Brice that he courted throughout their marriage from this union are six children.
Luke settled his young family in Merced, California and built a home on 7th street. In 1947 he began working for the City of Merced for 36 years, retiring in 1983. But during that time he had his own side job, after a long day’s work and on weekends he had his own Trucking/Hauling business forming Walkers Trucking working into his retirement from the City and well long afterwards.
Luke had a strong belief in work, family and church. He continued his Christian walk at St. Matthew Baptist Church of Merced with his family. He was an ordained Deacon where he served faithfully. He was a charter member, helping with the transition of the present church from Childs Avenue.
Luke enjoyed Basketball and Boxing and truly enjoyed driving his family to Louisiana to visit family kin. He is known for his stories and his warm delightful smile. He was a strong willed, kindhearted inspiring man and left this world peacefully in his sleep surrounded by loving family.
He leaves to cherish his memory Jearlener (Brice) Walker of 72 years and their 6 children as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, April 20, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home located at 1490 B Street Merced, California 95341. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 beginning at 11:00a.m. at Apostolic Tabernacle located at 2745 CA-140, Merced, California 95340 with Interment following at Evergreen Memorial Park located at 1480 B Street Merced, California 95341
