Doris was born in Jackson County, NC on the fifteenth of October, 1931 to the late Sharon Festus and Monica Campbell McCall. She was a retired operator from Southern Bell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty years, Garland Oscar Shook, Jr., and a stepson, Lawrence Shook.
She was a devoted and active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church. Doris was a unique woman who loved life, she was known as “The Gourd Lady” as she prepared and sold them at farmers markets. She also made jewelry from sweet potatoes and enjoyed playing bridge. Doris volunteered at the Museum of Coastal Carolina and the 4H organization.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Glenda Shook of Newton, NC; a sister, Margaret Coffman and husband Ralph of Sioux Falls, SD; a grandson, William “Billy” Shook; nieces, Beverly Barger and husband Glen of Newton, NC, Tomaline Abernathy and husband Michael of Maiden, NC; nephew, Dwight Shook and wife Theresa of Ft. Myers, FL; very close friend, Melissa (Missy) Holden of Supply, NC.
A Celebration of life will be held at eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday the twenty sixth of May 2018 in St. Luke Lutheran Church with The Reverend Henry Rehder officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family asks with gratitude that memorials be made in her name to St Luke Lutheran Church, “Shook Memorial” at 5869 Ocean Highway, Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469.
