Theodore Vincent Hairfield Sr.

He was born on March 22, 1927 as the youngest child of seven of the late Edward M. Hairfield Sr. and Elizabeth Taylor Hairfield of Morganton.

Doc, having lived a long 91 years, is preceded in death by his siblings, his cherished wife, Margaret Maynard Hairfield and subsequent long-time companion Jane Brady.

He received his medical degree from Wake Forest Bowman Gray School of Medicine and later completed his residency at the University of Alabama. He was part of the “Great Generation” serving in WWII primarily in Europe. He returned to Lenoir where he devoted his life to the assistance of others.

Doc believed in the principles of the country doctor; making house calls, receiving crops from the local farmers in lieu of payment, and providing medical services for the community such as being the attending physician for the Bunny Maynard football league. He spent most of his time in general practice; he also spent many nights and weekends as the primary ER physician and held the title of “Super Stitcher”.

In addtition to his medical service, Doc was active in other community events including the local Optimist Club where he was known for his rendition of “Rindercella” and how he “Slopped his dipper”.

When not at work or serving his community; Doc would be seen pulling wheelies on his motorcycle or out on his many wood-cutting adventures with his buddies. He also loved the game of golf and proudly attended the Masters for many years.

Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Theodore Vincent Hairfield II, of Asheville, daughters; Georgianne Mullis of Cary, Jacque Hairfield of Durham, Peggy Tesh of Greensboro and Susan Hairfield of Wilson along with ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home with Rev. Carter Gillespie officiating. A visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to the service from 1:30 pm until 2:00 pm at the Pendrty’s Lenoir Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request memorials be made to the Hock Family Pavillion at 4023 N Roxboro Rd, Durham, NC 27704.
