Dorothy was born in Manhattan on May 24, 1921 to the late Peter and Bertha Bazdan, who emigrated from Yugoslavia (now Croatia). Dorothy received her Master’s Degree in English from Columbia University and went on to teach a productive 28 year career with the Newark, NJ Education System. During WWII, Dorothy volunteered at the USO in Manhattan where she met Charles, who volunteered to serve during the war in the US Navy. During their time together, they lived in Manhattan, Denver, and Salt Lake City; finally settling in Glen Ridge, NJ to raise their family before retiring to Martin Downs, FL. Dorothy enjoyed going to Broadway Shows and the opera while living in New Jersey and in retirement, traveling to Europe and traveling around the United States for months at a time with Charles in their 5th wheel camper. During retirement, they moved to Knoxville, TN to be closer to their family.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Everett Bowland; son, Kevin Patrick Bowland; and daughter-in-law, Marsha Bowland.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Bruce Peter Bowland and his wife, Gail, of Ten Mile, TN, and Craig Charles Bowland of Arlington, TX; grandchildren, Jacob (Jennifer) Bowland of Mansfield, TX; Patrick (Kathy) Bowland of Atlanta, GA; Christopher Bowland and Danielle Bowland, both of Knoxville; and great grandsons, Joshua Bowland and Connor Bowland. Dorothy will be dearly missed by her family.
