It is with heavy hearts that the family of John R. Winston Sr. announce his passing Friday evening April 6, 2018 at his home. He peacefully transitioned from Life to Glory in the presence of his loving family. He is the eldest twin (Paul) By 11 minutes born to Mother Edna Winston, who preceded him in death December of 1980
Pastor John R Winston Sr. achieved many accomplishments during his lifetime. He graduated from Tilden Tech High School located in Chicago Illinois in 1958. As a young man he demonstrated great athleticism in the area of football, wrestling, swimming, weight and bodybuilding. He led his school to many championships. Over four consecutive years he served as MVP of the football and wrestling teams. After graduation he attended Wilson Junior College, studying liberal arts. On July 9, 1960 he acknowledged the call of God on his life after which he then began attending Moody Bible College where he studied Old Testament Survey, upon being baptized in Jesus name he studied at the feet of Pastor N.J. Hall, who would later become his father-in-law. He fell in love with Pastor Hall’s daughter Jacqueline E. Hall, she remained the wife of his youth whom he affectionately called, “Baby” until his departure from this life. Two children were born from this union John R. Winston Jr. (who preceded his father in death on December 19, 2015) and Janene A. Winston, who currently resides in Houston Texas. After becoming a Christian Pastor Winston was a true light and a humble servant, he labored as a willing worker in a variety of different capacities with his father in law until 1975 when he was appointed Assistant Pastor of Holy Mount Zion Pentecostal Church under the leadership of Pastor John E Wilson. In March 1977 he was elevated to the office of Pastor of Holy Mount Zion where he faithfully cared for the flock of God until his retirement in 2002, not only was Pastor Winston a dedicated servant of God he was a faithful father and a faithful employee of American Airlines for over 35 years. A model employee receiving accolades and rewards for outstanding service. In those 35 years he was never late and nor did he miss a day of work until his retirement in 2003.
After retiring he continued to teach and to preach the word of God in nursing homes, housing complexes, where ever God open the door he took the gospel to those in the highways and hedges. Upon relocating to Houston, Texas he also served alongside his son Apostle John R Winston Jr. and Pastor Kay Shorter Winston at Spirit in Life Church of Deliverance, located in Houston Texas.
Cherished memories will be treasured by his wife Jacqueline E. Hall of 56 years and his daughter Janine A. Winston, his grandchildren Renée Winston, Robin Winston, John R. Winston III, Jordan A. Winston, Jonathan T. Winston, Janae J.N. Winston, Great grandchildren Jacob, London, Noah, Chloe, and Josiah, And step grandchildren and great grandchildren thru marriage from his son John. He also leaves to mourn three brothers Paul (Mary) Michael (Loretta)and Clarence, Two sisters Gloria (James) and Gilberta (Sam). A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great cousins, and many, many, many friends.
